The first thing he tells someone on day one has nothing to do with technique. It is to be mindful of what you pick up and not to overload yourself, because a mover carrying more than he should is how floors, door frames and furniture get damaged. What he watches hardest in a new hire's first weeks is how they set a piece down. Pull the dolly a moment too early and the item drops the last few inches instead of being lowered, which is all it takes to mark a hardwood floor. What goes wrong on office moves that never goes wrong on a house move is direction. In a house there is one customer. In an office there can be five people trying to coordinate at once, none of them working from the same plan, and the crew ends up standing still. The thing business owners forget most often is labelling. Proper labels on every box and every piece mean the crew can put things where they belong without stopping to ask as each item comes through the door. ### What Sean Thinks Most Movers Get Wrong Deliberately low estimates. A company quotes a number it knows is short in order to win the booking, then charges the real amount on the day, because the job was always going to take longer than the quote said. A house floods or catches fire and somebody has to be there quickly, getting out whatever can still be saved before mould reaches it. Three things from those seven years carry into how Legacy moves people. Condition matters, and you had better be able to prove it. Contents coming out of a fire are stored so an insurance adjuster can walk an aisle and assess every single piece: is the foot of this dresser swollen, how high did the water get, is this smoke damage or is it burnt. You do not stack that warehouse to save space, you line everything up facing outward so nothing is hidden. Years of working that way makes a person precise about the state of other people's belongings, and specific about the difference between what is genuinely damaged and what only looks it. There is no such thing as too many pads. Nick has never once seen a move go wrong because a crew used too many. He learned flat packing for glass and fragile pieces in restoration, learned to load a truck properly, and brought both with him. Nobody in that house chose to have you there. A restoration customer is standing in a situation they did not pick, and some of what they have lost is not coming back. Every move is stressful. That is a different kind of stress, and it teaches you quickly that being professional and being sensitive are the same job. ### Day to Day at Legacy Nick runs the finance and administrative side of the company: bookkeeping, payroll, asset and inventory records, cash flow, storage tracking, year end and taxes, plus the compliance work that keeps a trucking company legal. Nick has a commerce degree and nine years of public sector finance behind him, so the numbers side of a growing company is held by someone who has done it at a far larger scale. ### What Nick Thinks Most Movers Get Wrong Attention to detail, and it shows up in two places. On the truck it is the walkthrough. A crew that walks the whole house before touching anything knows immediately whether the job in front of them matches the estimate, and can tell the office right away if it does not. After that it is the same list every time: pad wrap properly, protect the house, pack the fragile items, load the truck the right way, communicate, and do not rush. Nick also thinks everyone on a crew should know how to load a truck, not just the driver. If only the driver knows what belongs where, nobody else on the job can see a risk while it is being created.
