Every piano has different requirements. Here's how we handle each type:
- Upright pianos: The most common type. They weigh 300-800 lbs and fit through most doorways, but their height and center of gravity make stairs tricky. We use a piano board and a two-person minimum on every upright move.
- Baby grand pianos: The legs and lyre must be removed before the move, then reassembled at the destination. We handle this as part of the service.
- Grand and concert grand pianos: The largest and most involved. Full disassembly is required. The lid, pedal lyre, and legs come off; the body is wrapped and placed flat on a piano board for loading. Reassembly at delivery is included.
- Digital and electronic pianos: Lighter than acoustic instruments but still fragile electronics. We pad and secure them the same way.
- Antique pianos: Older wood, original hardware, and sometimes irreplaceable finishes. We treat these with extra care and assess them during the quote.

Piano moving follows a specific process. We don't improvise with dollies and hope for the best.
Before the move
We visit in advance for the free on-site quote. We check doorway widths, staircase dimensions, elevator availability in apartment buildings, and how the piano sits in the room. This is where we catch problems before they happen on moving day.
On the day
Our crew arrives with padded moving blankets, a piano board (skid board), piano dollies, ramps, and floor protection. For grand pianos, we disassemble the legs and lyre before wrapping the body. For uprights, we pad the exterior, strap it to the piano board, and roll it carefully to the truck.
Loading and transport
The piano is secured in the truck, not just padded and stacked. We position it so it won't shift in transit.
Delivery and reassembly
We unload with the same care. Grand pianos are reassembled at the destination: legs, lyre, and lid reattached. We place the piano exactly where you want it and do a final walkthrough before we leave.

Older homes with tight staircases
Many of the city's most piano-filled homes are in older neighbourhoods: Wolseley, River Heights, Osborne Village, St. Boniface. These houses were built long before anyone thought about moving a 600-lb instrument out of them. We've handled enough low ceilings, sharp landings, and narrow doorways to know what works. Our on-site assessment catches these issues before moving day.
Apartment buildings
Buildings along Portage Ave, in the North End, and downtown often require elevator booking, time-of-day restrictions, and coordination with building management. We handle this as part of the move.
Winter piano moves
Piano wood and internal components are sensitive to extreme cold. A Winnipeg January is not kind to any instrument. We minimize the time your piano is exposed to outdoor temperatures during loading and unloading. We also recommend waiting 2-4 weeks after a winter move before having the piano tuned. The instrument needs time to settle at room temperature before a tuning holds correctly.

Piano move costs vary. We don't publish fixed rates because every move is different, but here's what goes into the quote:
- Piano type: Uprights require less setup than grand pianos. Grand piano disassembly and reassembly adds time.
- Stairs: At both origin and destination. We account for the number of flights and the staircase layout.
- Distance: Local Winnipeg moves are priced differently from long-distance moves. We also move pianos across Canada.
- Access challenges: Tight hallways, low ceilings, no elevator, or building time restrictions all affect what the move requires.

Yes. Any move shifts the tension on the strings slightly, and temperature or humidity changes during transit add to it. We recommend waiting 2-4 weeks after the move before booking a tuning appointment. This gives the piano time to settle at room temperature before the tuning holds properly.
