The most common packing mistake is using large boxes for heavy things. A large box full of books is almost impossible to carry safely and will likely split at the bottom.
A good rule of thumb: if it's heavy, use a small box. If it's big but light, a large box is fine. Mix sizes — you'll use more small and medium boxes than large ones.
How many boxes do you need?
A rough guide by home size:
- 1-bedroom apartment: 20 to 30 boxes
- 2-bedroom home: 30 to 45 boxes
- 3-bedroom home: 45 to 70 boxes
- 4+ bedrooms: 70 or more
These are starting points. Kitchens and storage rooms usually need more boxes than expected. We always recommend buying a few extras rather than running out mid-pack.

Winnipeg weather puts extra stress on moving boxes. In winter, snow and slush get tracked through doorways. Cardboard absorbs moisture quickly, especially on cold days when condensation builds up on boxes moved from a warm house to a cold truck.

Packing is the part most people underestimate. It takes longer than expected, and it matters more than people think. A badly packed box is more likely to have something break in transit.

Yes. You don't need to book a full move to buy supplies from us. We're happy to sell boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and other materials separately. Call us at (204) 296-2223 to check what's currently in stock and arrange a pickup.
Packing paper is best for wrapping dishes, filling space in boxes, and protecting surfaces from scratches. Bubble wrap provides more cushioning for fragile items like glassware, electronics, and anything with protruding parts. For most moves, you'll use both.
Ask us about our current box return policy when you call. Policies vary depending on supply and condition. We'd rather you buy a few extra and have them available on moving day than run short mid-pack. Call (204) 296-2223 for details.
For most Winnipeg moves, ordering 1 to 2 weeks before moving day gives you enough time to pack at a reasonable pace. That said, if your move is coming up quickly, call us. We can often get supplies arranged on short notice.
Lightly used boxes in good condition are fine for most items. Avoid boxes that are damp, crushed at the corners, or have soft spots. Those have already lost structural integrity. For fragile or heavy items, new boxes are worth it.
