Crossing a provincial border adds a few tasks that a local move does not. None of these are hard, but missing one can be a headache. Here is what to handle when you relocate from Manitoba to Alberta:
- Driver's licence: exchange your Manitoba licence for an Alberta licence at any Alberta registry agent within 90 days of establishing residency. You surrender your current licence, and no road test is required for Canadian drivers.
- Alberta Health Care (AHCIP): apply as soon as you arrive. Manitoba Health keeps you covered for up to three months during the transition.
- Vehicle registration: transfer your vehicle to Alberta within 90 days. Alberta requires an out-of-province inspection before registering your vehicle, so book this at a licensed inspection facility.
- Address updates: CRA, your bank, insurance providers, Service Canada, and any subscriptions tied to your Winnipeg address.
One lifestyle difference worth knowing: Alberta has no provincial sales tax. You pay 5% GST on most purchases, compared to the combined rates back home in Manitoba.
